The short answer
Both are excellent entry-level cloud certifications with near-identical difficulty and career value. The decision comes down to which cloud your target employers use.
Choose AZ-900 if you target government, banking, or large enterprises — especially in Australia and the UK, where Azure dominates those sectors — or if your organisation already runs Microsoft 365.
Choose AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) if you target startups, tech companies, or the US market broadly, where AWS holds the largest market share.
If you genuinely cannot decide: take AZ-900 first. It is slightly cheaper ($99 vs $100), never expires (AWS requires renewal every 3 years), and the concepts transfer almost entirely — cloud fundamentals are cloud fundamentals.
Exam format compared
AZ-900: 40–60 questions, 65 minutes, scored 1–1,000 with 700 to pass. Costs ~$99 USD. Certification never expires.
AWS CLF-C02: 65 questions (50 scored + 15 unscored), 90 minutes, scored 100–1,000 with 700 to pass. Costs $100 USD. Certification expires after 3 years and requires recertification.
Both are multiple choice with no hands-on labs. AWS includes multiple-response questions ("choose TWO") which some candidates find harder. Microsoft's questions lean toward business scenarios; AWS leans slightly more toward service identification.
Neither has prerequisites, and both can be taken online with a proctor or at a test centre.
Market share vs your job market
Globally, AWS leads cloud infrastructure with roughly 31–32% market share against Azure's 23–25%. But global share is misleading for career planning — what matters is who hires in YOUR market.
In Australia, Azure dominates the sectors that hire in volume: federal and state government agencies run on Azure under whole-of-government agreements, and the major banks and telcos are heavily Microsoft-aligned. Australian job boards consistently show more Azure-tagged roles than AWS in government and enterprise IT.
In the US startup and tech sector, AWS remains the default. In the UK, the picture mirrors Australia: government and finance lean Azure.
The practical takeaway: search your local job board for "Azure" and "AWS" in the roles you actually want. The ratio you see is worth more than any global statistic.
Difficulty and preparation time
Both exams sit at the same difficulty level: passable in 1–2 weeks of focused study for someone with basic IT literacy, slightly longer for complete beginners.
Candidates who have taken both generally report AWS CLF-C02 feels marginally harder — it covers more services at shallow depth, and its multiple-response questions punish partial knowledge. AZ-900 covers fewer services but tests governance and cost management more thoroughly.
Free official training exists for both: Microsoft Learn's AZ-900 path and AWS Skill Builder's Cloud Practitioner Essentials. Both are good; both are insufficient alone. Practice exams are the highest-value preparation for either — the exams test decision-making between services, which only scenario practice builds.
Career paths after each
After AZ-900, the Microsoft track leads to AZ-104 (Azure Administrator), AZ-204 (Developer), then specialist and expert certifications like AZ-305 (Solutions Architect Expert). Azure administrator roles in Australia typically pay A$95,000–A$140,000.
After CLF-C02, the AWS track leads to Solutions Architect Associate (SAA-C03) — the single most in-demand cloud certification worldwide — then Developer, SysOps, and Professional tiers. AWS Solutions Architects command similar or slightly higher salaries in tech-sector roles.
Neither foundational cert qualifies you for engineering roles alone. Both function as the entry ticket that gets a CV past screening and proves baseline knowledge before the associate-level certification that actually lands jobs.
Holding BOTH foundational certs is increasingly common and takes little extra effort — roughly 70% of the concepts overlap, so the second exam typically needs only a few days of delta study.
The verdict
There is no wrong choice — both certifications are respected, affordable, and achievable. The deciding factors, in order of importance:
First, your target employers' cloud. Check local job listings — this outweighs everything else.
Second, existing ecosystem familiarity. If you use Microsoft 365 or your company has Azure subscriptions, AZ-900's console and concepts will feel familiar faster.
Third, renewal preference. AZ-900 never expires; AWS requires re-certification every three years. For a set-and-forget foundational credential, Microsoft's policy is friendlier.
Whichever you pick, take it seriously enough to pass first time, then move promptly to the associate-level certification in the same track — that is where the salary impact actually lives.
